FerraCote is a water based latex emulsion that chemically converts commonly occurring red rust, Fe2O3, to a black crystalline solid, FeO. It dries to a tough, long lasting, black protective coating. Dried FerraCote is an excellent primer for all types of industrial and automotive topcoats. Unprotected steel is extremely susceptible to moisture and liquids and has a tendency to corrode almost immediately upon exposure. The onset of rust is followed by rapid deterioration of the metal. The best course of action at this stage is replacement of the rusting object or structure, or sand blasting it to white metal and recoating it with appropriate coating or coatings.

FerraCote is a quick and inexpensive solution to the aforementioned costly measures. Application of FerraCote precludes the need for dismantling the rusting structures or the use of complex procedures. Simply wire brushing the target surface to remove all lose rust and mil scale is all that is needed prior to application of FerraCote. This step is critical in order to allow Ferra- Cote to bond to the actual metal and provide optimal results. It is important to note that Ferra- Cote reacts only with ferrous metals and is completely ineffective on aluminum, zinc aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

FerraCote Application

Stir the liquid thoroughly prior to application. It is extremely easy to apply and may be applied by brush or by spraying. For best long term results and to prevent recurrence of the rust make sure that the target surface is properly prepared and is free of oil, grease and other contaminants. Rusted surfaces that do not receive the coating will continue to rust. The conversion from red rust to black iron oxide is a chemical process and may take from 24 to 48 hours to complete. The off-white coating will turn completely black to indicate that the conversion process is complete. FerraCote is a very effective primere and will accept most commonly available water or solvent based top coats.

FerraCote Cleanup

All normal precautions for use, storage and handling should be excercised as with any other paint product. Work area, tools, spills, etc. can be easily rinsed with fresh, clean water. When applying FerraCote via spraying, make sure to protect surrounding areas from overspray. Storage temperatures should not exceed 16° - 25°C (60° to 77°F).
